When the clocks “fall back” for the winter months in Boston, it can be tough for college students to balance classes, clubs, jobs, study time, and countless other obligations. The earlier sunsets can throw off your sleep schedule, hamper productivity, and make you feel gloomy. Here are four tips to help you adjust smoothly and stay on top of your daily routine at Boston University (BU).

1. Prioritize morning light

When your body feels confused about the time change, sunlight is your best friend. Even if winter tends to make you sleepy, take a quick morning walk along Commonwealth Avenue, grab a coffee at Pavement with a friend and stroll along BU beach, or find a sunny window seat at the GSU to help your brain stay awake and stabilize your mood throughout the day.

2. Take a power nap

When school gets overwhelming and the sunlight disappears, your whole day can start to feel slow and heavy. A power nap can make a huge difference after the time shift. Find a quiet place like the fourth floor of Mugar or on the upper floors of CDS to take a 15-20 minute nap amid the busy schedule. Just don’t nap too long in the afternoon — you don’t want to disrupt your nighttime sleep schedule.

3. Hydrate and fuel up — and don’t skip meals

Fatigue hits harder when your body is low on water and food. Carry a water bottle and grab some snacks at City Convenience or even a banana at a BU dining hall as you move throughout your day. Quick energy boosts can help you stay focused during long lectures and study sessions.

4. Give yourself grace

You are not alone. Professors, TAs, and friends all go through the same struggles. If you feel slow or are falling behind, it is totally normal. Be patient with yourself and take breaks when necessary. Give your body and your mind some space to adjust and get back on track.
