Ever wondered what it’s like to run public relations (PR) campaigns for real clients while still in college? At Boston University, students don’t have to wait until after graduation to get hands-on experience. They can dive right in through PRLab — BU’s award-winning student-run PR agency.
This isn’t just a class. It’s an award-winning, full-service agency where students collaborate with actual clients, manage real projects, and get a taste of the fast-paced PR world—all before they even land their first internship.

“PRLab gives students an unmatched experience,” says Sophia Featherstone, the vice president of PRLab. “You’re not just learning PR concepts — you’re actually doing the work. Writing press releases, pitching to journalists, running social media accounts… it’s the real deal.”
What’s It Like to Work at PRLab?
Think of PRLab as a crash course in PR, minus the long lectures and with way more hands-on action. Students sign up, get assigned to a client, and then it’s go-time.

“Each semester, we work with about 15 to 20 clients, all with different needs,” Featherstone said. “Some want media coverage, some need help with branding, others are focused on social media strategy. No two projects are the same, which makes it super exciting.”
And just like in the real world, students have to juggle deadlines, client meetings, and last-minute changes.

“It’s Like an Internship—But Better”
For students, PRLab is more than just another class — it’s a stepping stone into the professional world.
Isabella Carter, a junior studying PR, says joining PRLab was the best decision she made. “I’ve learned so much more by actually working with clients than I ever could in a lecture. It’s basically an internship, but with the support of professors and classmates to help you along the way.”
“I’ve built such a strong portfolio from PRLab. When I applied for internships, I already had real work to show, and that made a huge difference.”
Senior Karen Saul agrees. “I’ve built such a strong portfolio from PRLab. When I applied for internships, I already had real work to show, and that made a huge difference,” she said.
The PR World is Changing—And PRLab is Keeping Up
PRLab isn’t just about writing press releases and cold-calling reporters. Students learn how to navigate the ever-changing digital landscape, from social media strategy to influencer collaborations and crisis communications.

“PR today is about so much more than just media coverage,” Featherstone said. “We’re diving into SEO, analytics, and digital storytelling. The industry is evolving, and we’re making sure our students are ahead of the curve.”
So, What’s Next for PRLab?
With each semester, PRLab is expanding its reach, working with bigger clients, and giving students more opportunities to shine.
“The goal is to keep growing, keep innovating, and keep giving students the best hands-on experience possible.”

If you’re a BU student looking to break into PR, PRLab is the place to be.
“It’s more than just a class—it’s a community, a launchpad, and honestly, one of the best things BU has to offer,” Featherstone said. “If you’re even remotely interested in PR, get involved. You won’t regret it.”
