Remember that moment when you saw a self-driving car for the first time? It felt like something straight out of science fiction: something strange, unheard of, something we didn’t imagine would exist in our lifetime. Well, that’s kind of how Artificial Intelligence feels in the communications industry – it’s both futuristic and starting to become a tangible force shaping our world.

Currently at COM, there are ongoing conversations about the use of AI in universities and beyond, but there isn’t an actual agreement on how we want to use it across the board. Some of my professors are ecstatic about it and promote its use inside and outside the classroom, while other professors see it as destructive and harmful to human creativity.  Of course, as COM students, it’s important that we stay ahead of the curve, so it’s essential to understand how AI is transforming the communication landscape for the better before denoting it as a nuisance.

One of the most pressing challenges in the information age is information overload. We are constantly bombarded with a barrage of messages – emails, social media posts, and news articles – creating a confusing, ever-expanding digital landscape. In this context, AI presents itself as a valuable tool, not a replacement for human ingenuity.

Instead of viewing AI solely as a content creation machine, it is crucial to recognize its potential as a collaborative partner. AI can alleviate the burden of mundane tasks, allowing COM students to focus on the core of their education – the strategic and creative aspects of communication. This newfound focus empowers them to delve deeper into strategic campaign development and the crafting of impactful narratives, honing the skills that are truly at the heart of effective communication.

However, it is essential to dispel the misconception that AI is designed to supersede human communicators. AI is not a replacement, but rather a complementary tool, designed to enhance the human skillset. It can be viewed as a valuable brainstorming partner, capable of sparking ideas, suggesting improvements, and ensuring consistency across projects. This collaboration is akin to having an additional, tireless brain in the room, offering fresh perspectives and mitigating the limitations of writer’s block.

In my ME544 Technology for Musicians course, we are encouraged by our professor to use AI to help us create music for the course. Despite this encouragement, the professor emphasizes that we should use AI tools as a way to make the process less stressful and more efficient. Human creativity, human stories, and humanness are all essential to ensure that what we create resonates with huge audiences. This applies in both music and communication.

As hinted by my last example, despite its immense potential, it is imperative to acknowledge the inherent limitations of AI. No algorithm can replicate the human touch – the critical thinking, judgment, and creative spark that are fundamental to impactful communication. Communication enthusiasts, with their unique perspectives and ability to tell compelling stories, remain irreplaceable in the communication ecosystem.

Ethical considerations surrounding AI usage are also paramount. Biases embedded in algorithms and the potential spread of misinformation pose real threats. Therefore, responsible use and human oversight are crucial. We must harness AI for the greater good, ensuring its benefits extend beyond mere profitability and contribute to a more ethically sound communication landscape.

In conclusion, AI is not a panacea, but rather a powerful tool that can significantly enhance our communication toolkit. By embracing its potential while acknowledging its limitations, COM students, as future communicators, can forge a future where technology and human creativity work in an integrated fashion. At COM, we are dedicated to fostering this collaborative spirit, harnessing the power of both AI and human ingenuity to push boundaries and reach new heights in the ever-evolving world of communication. This collaborative journey, with its blend of human and artificial intelligence, holds the potential to unlock innovative communication strategies and propel us forward towards an exciting, uncharted future.
