The Blue Chip Awards are an undergraduate student honor conferred by the College of Communication. Eligible students, including those graduating in January, May, or August of 2024, can self-nominate for this award. To qualify, students must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.30 or higher and must complete a web-based application form, which includes the submission of their current resume and letters of recommendation.
Each applicant is required to submit one letter of recommendation from a COM professor and one from an internship supervisor. Although only one letter from each category is mandatory, students may opt to submit up to two.
As described by Annie O’Connell, the assistant director of COM undergraduate affairs, “the Blue Chip Award is our most prestigious honor awarded to COM seniors.” It celebrates students who are not only academic leaders within Boston University and the College of Communication but also those who have distinguished themselves through internships or professional experiences in their respective fields.
The award selection is managed by the COM Undergraduate Affairs but is ultimately decided by the College’s three academic departments: Film and Television, Journalism, and Mass Communication, Advertising, and Public Relations. Students with double majors in COM are advised to apply to only one department that best aligns with their aspirations for the Blue Chip award.
A notable aspect, as O’Connell mentions, is the award’s distinction, emphasizing, “the Blue Chip Award is only given to a very small handful of students in each academic department… Usually between all three departments there are no more than 20 winners, so it is pretty exclusive!”
All application materials, including recommendation letters and resumes, must be sent to Kayla Timmins, Administrator of COM Undergraduate Affairs, at ktimmins@bu.edu.
Don’t forget to apply!
